The air is calm and cool, exactly what I need as I stand hidden under the darkness of the night. It’s incredibly late, but I haven’t been able to get any sleep. Plus, I revel in moments like this. It’s quiet because everyone’s asleep. There’s no one trying to talk to me or bother me.
But of course, I wouldn’t be so lucky.
The ruffling of feet draws my attention, and I whirl around to see who it is. I immediately recognize Andrei. It might be dark as hell, but every part of me reacts to his presence. He’s one of the few people on earth that I would know in a heartbeat. Annoyance rolls through me.
“Are you kidding me?” I say.
He steps forward. “I didn’t follow you here, Lil.”
We definitely need to have a conversation about the nickname. He used to call me that in the past. We’re not in the past anymore.
“You shouldn’t be out here alone. It’s late,” he says when I don’t speak.
“You’re not the boss of me,” I mutter. “I can do whatever I want.”
“Never one to follow the rules,” he muses. “I see that hasn’t changed. I can’t lie, I’m really curious about how you survived for so long in the army.”
“I was a perfect soldier,” I say dryly.
Andrei gives me a look. “Why don’t I believe that?”
Because it’s a lie. I was a nightmare. Always running into battle without orders and doing whatever I wanted, my superior’s orders be damned. In my defense, I always made the right calls, and my decisions always managed to save a life. Still, it’s a wonder I was never kicked out. But my superiors always had soft spots for me. I guess they admired my unbreakable spirit.
“That’s your problem. You weren’t there,” I say.
“You’re right. I wasn’t. But I’m sure you were amazing.”
“I was pretty damn great.”
“Humble too,” he states.
That makes me smile. We relapse into silence, and it’s not uncomfortable in the slightest. It’s Andrei’s superpower. He can make you feel at ease in complete and utter silence. When you’re around him, you don’t need words. I used to love how I could stay with him for hours, and I didn’t need to stay a word. He certainly takes a lot of advantage of it. He has always been a man of very few words. I missed that. Certainly more than Liam yapping in my ear, twenty-four-seven.
“By the way,” I start, breaking the silence. “I heard about your little fight.”
“Colonel Kennedy spilled the beans? And here I thought the man had some honor,” Andrei says dryly.
“He didn’t spill the beans, and even if he did, do not call his honor into question. He’s three times the man you ever were to me.”
Andrei flinches, and I immediately feel bad.
“I’m sorry. You didn’t deserve that.”
“It’s all right, Lil. We both know I did.”
I blow out a harsh breath. “Stop fighting with my friend.”
“Don’t worry, I’m done with Kennedy. He’s not the one I’ve got an issue with.”
“We don’t have an issue either.”
“Yes, we do,” he says, his tone resolved.
I sigh softly. “I’m sorry I lied to you about being engaged. It was stupid.”
“Then why’d you do it?” he questions.
“Because I was embarrassed. You thought I spent all these years waiting for you, and I wanted to quash that notion immediately.”
“And did you? Spend all these years waiting for me?”
The question doesn’t piss me off. I shake my head softly.
“No, I gave up on the idea of you a long time ago, Andrei.”
He doesn’t say anything for several seconds. When he does, his voice is low and vulnerable.
“I’d be lying if I said that didn’t hurt.” I turn to him in surprise at those words. “But I’m glad you made a way for yourself on your own, Lil. I always knew you could do it.”
I nod, looking at his face, trying to make sense of his features, despite the darkness of the night. I’m not about to admit that I missed him, but I really did. I missed his stupid face, I missed his strong jaw, his nose that I’m sure has been broken at least twice. The first time being in defense of me. We have so much history together, so much that’s always going to tie us together.
“I don’t want to hate you anymore,” I whisper.
It’s soft, and I’m worried the words were carried by the wind, but the look in his eyes is a clear inclination that he heard me.
“So don’t,” Andrei says easily.
“I’ll try my best.”
The only problem is with Andrei, I’m not sure there’s an in-between. I fell in love with Andrei when I was just twenty years old, soon after I met him. Then he broke my heart at twenty-three, and I hated him. So much. And now that I’m thirty-four, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be. Is there really a middle ground for my feelings? An on-and-off switch for love seems like a prayer, not reality.
“I won’t leave you again, Lil,” Andrei says softly.
I turn around, staring into the night.
“No, you won’t,’ I tell him. “Because I’m going to do it first this time.”
