Look Inside

I’m fucked.

I came to that realization a few days ago, after I kissed Fiona. It was honestly the best thing I felt in a long time. I didn’t realize the poets were onto something whenever they used words like fireworks and explosions to describe romantic encounters. I’ve been in a pretty bad state since the kiss. I went back to the hotel, packed my shit, and returned back to the inn that night.

The others have tried asking me what’s wrong, but I’ve been ignoring them in favor of installing some malware into the computers of corporations around the world with dirty secrets. Just little things to fuck with them or in cases of really corrupt organizations, I’m making sure it’s substantial damage.

A knock on my door interrupts me. I turn around fully expecting to see Mikaela. She’s the nosiest person living here right now and the most likely to bother me when I specifically asked everyone not to. Surprisingly, it’s Christian who steps into the room. I raise an eyebrow. He knows better than to try to talk to me when I really don’t feel like it.

“What’s up?” he asks, walking into the room without invitation and taking a seat on the bed.

“Nothing much,” I reply. “Just hacking into a paper company in Toronto and rerouting the money to some orphanages.”

His blue eyes narrow. “We talked about this, Nick. Hacking into international co-operations is a federal offense."

"So is being a hacker but that’s never stopped me before, in fact, it’s a skill the army made sure to utilize and is still utilizing today.”

“Good point,” Christian states with a small smile. “You good?”

“I’m just peachy,” I tell him.

“Really? Because you’ve barely left this room in three days. Something happened with Fiona Blake.”

It’s not a question. I’m sure they all know something happened in relation to her. The what is what they’re oblivious to. Even I’m not sure what happened with her. And I really have no idea what the best way to proceed is.

“Don’t worry, Chris. I’ve got it. I just came home to relax for a few days. I’m seeing Fiona next week.”

He frowns. “Talk to me, Nick. You always do this shit. Anytime something goes wrong with you, you clam up about it. You don’t talk to anyone for days. You spend all your time in this room with laptops and computers and screens. It’s not healthy, man.”

I lean back in my chair, turning away from the computers to face him fully.

“You really should let me deal with things on my own,” I tell him.

“Not in relation to this mission. You’ve got to share, Nicholas.”

His calling me Nicholas reminds me of Fiona, and since I’m trying very hard not to think about her, my jaw clenches.

“The mission’s going well, Captain. Give me a week, and she should be letting me into their house. I’ll try to dig up some information then.”

Christian nods. “And there’s nothing else we need to know? Nothing you want to talk about?”

“Nothing at all,” I reply before swiveling around in my seat to face my computer.

He’s worried, but he has never been a touchy-feeling kind of man. Which is why I thought they would send Mikaela to talk to me. She would probably have a better chance, mostly because I’m sure she wouldn’t stop pushing until I told her the truth.

The only problem is, I have no idea how to tell her I think I might be falling for Fiona. Which is why I needed a break. A few days away from her and I’ll start thinking clearly. I’ll see her for who she really is. And after spending all this time with her, it’s even more clear that she has something to hide.

I think back to what she said about her paintings and how dark they can get. I need to see those paintings. I have a feeling they would provide me with a glimpse into who Fiona really is. Because for the life of me, I can’t figure her out.

And there’s also that niggling voice in my head that seems insistent on believing that she’s a good person.

I really hope she’s not.
